Across the spectrum of low, middle and high income countries, there is a common need to attract and retain qualified personnel to design, build, operate, manage and maintain water resources and water & wastewater services. This is a serious challenge that needs to be tackled now; not tomorrow.

IWA recognised this need back in 2002 when it started to initiate a range of activities that would attract young water professionals to IWA and the water sector. This started with the development of Young Researcher conferences that were priced at much lower fee than IWA conferences, and in 2006 the first Young Water Professional Steering committee was formed – by IWA members of 35 and below – with the main aim to provide advice to IWA and support implementation of activities that would encourage ywps to become part of the network, and join the water sector in general. As such these activities were focused to:

promote ywps in Specialist groups (activities and events)

promote young professionals to enter the water sector and the IWA

Special YWP events at IWA congress

YWP conferences at affordable rates

YWP award

The Young Water Professional steering committee came up with further ideas and advice for IWA to become THE network for young water professionals (beyond just students) consisting of the following sub-cohorts with their respective needs:

Water professionals (30-35): Those that are taking the next step in their career, becoming managers, and need to develop leadership skills and big picture thinking.

Early career professionals (20-30): Searching for job/intern opportunities, developing their network, gain experience, developing soft skills.

Students (no age specification): Want to present, publish their paper, are looking for a job in the future, and want to develop an initial network.

Young water professional activities increasingly developed to:

Create visibility to young members and promote ywp

Presenting to IWA leaders (eg. Governing Assembly; Specialist Groups)

Promoting ywp positions in IWA leadership (eg. Governing member committees, Specialist groups, Strategic Council)

Best presentation/ poster awards

Writing of Newsletters

Create networking opportunities

Creating local country YWP networks for those that cannot afford travel – IWA YWP chapters

Create networking at events (eg. mentoring sessions between seniors and young)

Create online platform for discussion (Facebook; Linked in; Twitter)

Create professional development opportunities

Precongress workshops

Workshops on Career development or soft skill development

Production of magazine on Career opportunities in the water sector (World of Opportunities)

Create recognition

YWP profiles and stories online and in magazine (Water 21 – now the Source)

YWP award

YWP best presentation/ best poster awards

Professional development award – for organisations investing in young staff.

We proceed currently to integrate ywps further in the association and the water sector, and have the goal to empower the next generation of water leaders by supporting the sector to attract young professionals (ranging from social, natural and engineering sciences, policy makers, scholars and practitioners), and assisting them to fulfill their potential to become the global leaders in their field.

Want to become IWA YWP member?

Let your dreams come true!

IWA Young Water Professionals is a community established with the aim to empower them as emerging water talent in the water sector and the association. Who are they?
